Ron's 58 Fuelie History
A little over 18 years ago, April 4th 1988, my father's 1958 Fuel Injected,
290 HP Corvette had a small engine fire. It happened on Interstate 81 in
Pennsylvania at Exit 35 (now exit 116). I was just pulling onto the on ramp when the little puff of
smoke appeared from under the hood. As I opened the hood I saw the flames just
under the fuel meter of the injection unit. I closed the hood, the first and
biggest mistake. You can figure out the rest.
The process has been slow, with me being in the Marine Corps and deploying. I had plans to restart my restoration this year and get the her back on the road within the next year or two. It has been a long ten plus years of not driving my Dad's first Corvette. He bought the car from a lady across the street for $995.00 in 1969. I got the car and he got the money. Not the best way to get your first Corvette. Below you can click on the link to see what happened to the 58.
As it stands right now, I have just about finished the chassis and have it rolling again. If all works out right, I will have the body back on the frame and start the restoration of it. I will update this area a few times per month when progress has been made. Until then I will add some pictures of the car before the fire, during the fire, and after the fire to keep you amused. Check back to see the updates.
